Controversial Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington has filed a N300 million lawsuit against the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for alleged unlawful detention. The suit follows Darlington’s arrest over defamation and cyberstalking allegations linked to his public comments about Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy.
Despite being granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja on December 23, 2024, Darlington remained in police custody, prompting widespread criticism. His lawyer, Abubakar Marshal, accused Burna Boy of influencing the police to prolong his detention.
On January 6, 2025, the court ordered the police to release Darlington immediately, asserting that his continued detention violated his fundamental rights. Hours after regaining his freedom, the rapper filed a lawsuit demanding N300 million in damages for the infringement of his rights.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has set January 13 to hear Darlington’s suit. The adjournment was granted to allow Garba Audu, the police’s legal representative, sufficient time to review and respond to the claims.
Darlington’s case has sparked debates about abuse of power and the influence of celebrities in Nigeria’s legal and security systems. While Burna Boy has not officially commented on the allegations, his connection to the controversy has fueled significant public interest.
The outcome of the case could set a precedent for addressing fundamental rights violations and curbing undue influence in Nigeria’s justice system.
