The Taraba State Government, in collaboration with the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP), has taken a decisive step toward climate action by hosting a stakeholders’ validation workshop for its climate change policy and action plan in Jalingo on January 14, 2025. The initiative, supported by funding from the African Climate Foundation (ACF) and the European Climate Foundation (ECF), underscores the state’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental resilience.
Ahmed Lazarus, State Director for Climate Change, commended the technical team for their comprehensive approach in drafting the policy, which incorporates key sectors and employs both qualitative and quantitative assessments. He acknowledged the critical support of Governor Agbu Kefas and Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Ms. Aishat Barde, in creating an enabling environment for climate-focused initiatives.

“This document is not just a ministry initiative; it is a government-wide strategy. It outlines actionable steps for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving sustainable growth across multiple sectors,” Barde emphasized. She also highlighted the recent California wildfires as a stark reminder of climate change’s devastating impact, warning against inaction.
Governor Kefas, represented by Dr. Tafarki Eneme, Chair of the Taraba State House of Assembly Committee on Environment and Climate Change, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to combating climate change. “Climate change is not just an environmental issue—it affects our economy, health, and future generations. This policy aligns with international standards, including the Paris Agreement, and is a call to action for all stakeholders,” Kefas stated.
The workshop brought together a diverse mix of participants, including state and local government officials, community leaders, academics, private sector representatives, and international partners. Their contributions aim to ensure that the policy captures local realities while addressing national and global climate objectives.
SPP President Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke praised the state’s effort in producing a robust climate action document, urging the government to see the policy as a means to mobilize climate finance and pursue ambitious goals. Prof. Emmanuel Oladipo, leader of the technical team, echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of inter-agency collaboration to ensure the policy’s success.
This landmark policy is expected to attract climate finance and position Taraba State as a leader in sustainable development within Nigeria.
