Timileyin Ajayi, the man accused of the brutal killing of Salome Adaidu, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, pleaded not guilty during his arraignment at the High Court of Justice in Lafia on Monday, January 27, 2025.

Ajayi is facing a one-count charge of culpable homicide, punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria. The presiding judge, Justice Simon Aboki, heard the not-guilty plea, even as prosecutors presented chilling details of the case.

Salome Adaidu, a promising graduate undergoing her NYSC program, was reported missing days before her severed head was discovered in Ajayi’s possession. Police investigations revealed that Ajayi, who initially confessed to the murder, alleged he acted out of rage upon discovering that Adaidu was “cheating on him.” This claim has sparked widespread public outrage, with calls for swift justice.

Further findings showed that Adaidu’s remains were uncovered during a routine patrol, leading to Ajayi’s arrest. His initial confession painted a horrifying picture of premeditated violence, but his courtroom plea has now introduced a twist to the case.

Sources within the court indicated that the prosecution has amassed significant evidence, including forensic analysis, eyewitness accounts, and the suspect’s earlier confession. The case has drawn national attention, with many advocating for the enforcement of the maximum penalty under the law.

Family members of the late Adaidu were present in court, visibly distraught as the hearing commenced. Meanwhile, the NYSC community has expressed deep sadness over the loss of one of their own, describing her as a vibrant and hardworking individual with a bright future.

The court adjourned the case to February 15, 2025, for further hearing, where more evidence is expected to be presented. Ajayi remains in custody pending the continuation of his trial.
