Security operatives in Anambra State have intensified efforts to dismantle criminal networks as officers of the state’s Police Command arrested six suspected cultists in separate operations across the state. The arrests, carried out during routine ‘stop and search’ exercises on February 2 and 3, 2025, led to the recovery of firearms, dangerous weapons, hard drugs, and cult-related paraphernalia.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Tochukwu Ikenga, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the crackdown, stating that the operation aligns with the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam’s directive to strengthen security across Anambra.

One of the arrests occurred at Anaku/Omor Junction around 8 AM on February 2 when police intercepted eight individuals riding a motorcycle. Upon sighting the officers, the suspects attempted to escape, prompting a swift police chase that resulted in the apprehension of three men identified as Okafor Chibike, Ekene Lucky Nwadigbu, and Godwin Osaz—all residents of Omor.

A search of their belongings led to the discovery of one locally made double-barrel gun, a locally made revolver pistol, a dagger, three Android phones, and four ATM cards. Law enforcement officers have since launched a manhunt for the remaining gang members who managed to flee the scene.

In a separate operation at Eke Awgbu Junction on February 1, three additional suspects were arrested while traveling in a tricycle. Identified as Chidera Nwochia (20) from Amiri, Orlu, Imo State; Chizurumu Elvis (23) from Mbano, Imo State; and Kosisochukwu Obiechina (21) from Agukwu Nri, Anambra State, the suspects were caught in possession of live ammunition, a black axe, a gallon of substances suspected to be hard drugs, white and red cultist regalia, and ritual candles.

During interrogation, the trio reportedly confessed to being members of the Black Axe Confraternity and admitted they were en route to an initiation ceremony. Their tricycle was also impounded.

SP Ikenga further revealed that the police had seized a Q-Link motorcycle (Reg No. JRV 760 QH) and confiscated one metal axe, additional cult regalia, and other illicit items in connection with the arrests.

Authorities have assured the public that all suspects will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations, reinforcing the Anambra State Police Command’s zero tolerance for cultism and criminal activities.
