Renowned guitarist Ifiok Effanga, popularly known as Fiokee, is grappling with profound grief following the tragic death of his sister, Ememe Effang, allegedly due to domestic abuse. In a deeply emotional Instagram post dated February 7, 2025, Fiokee revealed his anguish and the shock of discovering his sister’s silent suffering. He emphasized the critical importance of speaking out against abuse, stating, “If you are in an abusive relationship, please, I beg you—speak up. I know it’s not easy. I know fear can make you stay quiet. But silence can be deadly. There are people who care, people who will help you. Please don’t wait until it’s too late.”

This devastating incident underscores a pervasive issue in Nigeria. According to a 2024 report by Document Women, non-intimate partner violence accounted for 55.6% of reported femicide cases, while intimate partner violence constituted 33.3%. Domestic violence cases made up 11.1% of the reports.

The tragedy of Ememe Effang is not an isolated case. In 2024, the Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria highlighted the alarming prevalence of gender-based violence, noting that nearly 1 in 3 women globally have experienced violence in their lifetime. In Nigeria, women face abuse in various forms, including domestic violence, workplace harassment, and harmful traditional practices.

Fiokee’s message resonates deeply: “If this message can save even one life, then her death will not be in vain.” His call to action urges individuals in abusive relationships to seek help and break the silence that often surrounds domestic violence.
