A devastating gunpowder explosion ripped through the Talata Mafara Market in Zamfara State on Tuesday, killing at least five people and leaving more than 50 others with severe injuries. The blast, which occurred around 3:45 p.m., sent shockwaves across the bustling weekly market, reducing several stalls to ashes and triggering widespread panic.

Eyewitnesses described the horrifying moment when a sudden explosion erupted near a blacksmith’s shop, instantly igniting a fire that engulfed the surrounding area. Muhammad Aliyu, a trader who narrowly escaped the blast, recounted the ordeal.

“The explosion happened at the blacksmith’s tent. I had just walked away when I heard the deafening sound. Within seconds, fire spread across the area, burning everything in its path,” Aliyu told DAILY POST.

Witnesses reported seeing bodies charred beyond recognition while others suffered severe burns and shrapnel wounds. The injured were swiftly transported to the Talata Mafara General Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the explosion, but initial reports suggest it may have been triggered by the mishandling of explosive materials, possibly gunpowder used for local firearms. The incident has once again raised concerns over the unregulated trade of hazardous substances in public markets.

Efforts to reach the Zamfara State Police Command for an official statement were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. However, local security operatives have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion and prevent a recurrence.
