The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the reported assault of a Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Okoye, by a student, Precious Goddy, allegedly over a TikTok recording.

In a statement issued by the NANS Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye, on Wednesday in Ibadan, the association called for a thorough investigation into the incident, stating that while students have rights, those rights must be exercised with respect and discipline.

“Acts of violence and misconduct have no place in our academic institutions. Universities are citadels of learning built on mutual respect between students and lecturers,” Akinteye said.

He reiterated that NANS stands for responsible student leadership and discipline and will not support any act that disrespects educators or tarnishes the image of the student body.

The student body urged UNIZIK’s management to conduct an unbiased investigation, ensuring due process and a fair hearing for all parties involved.

“If the student is found guilty, appropriate disciplinary action should be taken in accordance with institutional regulations to serve as a deterrent to others,” Akinteye added.

NANS further urged students nationwide to seek appropriate channels to air grievances rather than resorting to actions that could jeopardize their future.
