Manchester United icon Nicky Butt has expressed deep concern over the club’s current struggles, emphasizing that the Red Devils no longer possess the dominance they once had in English football. He highlighted the team’s inability to secure top talents, pointing to Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze as a prime example.
Butt remarked, “As much as I love Manchester United, they don’t have a God-given right to win trophies. It’s a big project.” He further lamented, “The lad at Crystal Palace, Eze, if it was around ten years ago [when Sir Alex Ferguson was the boss], United would have put a £70 million to £80 million bid and taken that boy.” He concluded, “They can’t do it now because they haven’t got the power and that’s the scariest thing.”
Currently, Manchester United sits 13th in the Premier League standings, a significant drop from their 8th-place finish last season. With only 29 points from 24 games, the team’s performance has been underwhelming. The appointment of manager Ruben Amorim in November 2024 was anticipated to bring a resurgence, but the desired turnaround has yet to materialize.
Eberechi Eze, the 26-year-old England international, has been a standout performer for Crystal Palace. Since joining from Queens Park Rangers in 2020, Eze has made 149 appearances, netting 32 goals and providing 23 assists.
Butt’s comments underscore a broader concern about Manchester United’s current trajectory and their diminished influence in the transfer market. The club’s supporters are eager to see strategic moves that will restore their team’s former glory.
