The Nigeria Police Force has officially refuted circulating rumors about the reinstatement of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). In a statement released on Monday, February 10, 2025, by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police emphasized that SARS remains dissolved and has not been reconstituted.
“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is not back in operation. The recent information regarding SARS reformation and rules of engagement should be treated with caution,” Adejobi stated. He further urged the public to verify the source of any information before accepting it as true.
This clarification comes in response to reports circulating on social media suggesting that SARS, which was disbanded on October 11, 2020, following the nationwide EndSARS protests, had been reinstated. The EndSARS movement, which began in October 2020, was a series of mass protests against police brutality, particularly targeting the abuses committed by SARS officers. The protests led to the unit’s dissolution and calls for comprehensive police reforms.
The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights within its operations. Citizens are encouraged to follow verified channels of the NPF on social media for accurate and up-to-date information.
