Tragedy struck on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, as a fatal crash along the Abeokuta-Ibadan highway claimed one life and left six others critically injured. The accident, which occurred near Ajobo village in Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State, involved a Lexus ES 350 and a Zafira 1.8 Space Wagon.

Eyewitness reports indicate that reckless driving by the Lexus driver, 26-year-old Abiodun Michael, led to the crash. Michael, who was traveling toward Abeokuta from Ibadan, allegedly failed to slow down at a sharp bend, lost control, and veered off his lane, colliding head-on with the Zafira car driven by 55-year-old Popoola Kayode.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Omolola Odutola, revealed that Popoola Kayode died on the spot, while six passengers sustained severe injuries.

Fleeing Driver Sparks Police Manhunt
Following the crash, the Lexus driver and his occupants fled the scene, abandoning the wreckage and victims. The police have launched an active investigation to apprehend the suspect.

“The Ogun State Police Command is investigating a fatal motor accident that occurred at about 14:30 hours along the Abeokuta/Ibadan highway. Tragically, Mr. Popoola Kayode died instantly, while six of his passengers suffered severe injuries,” Odutola stated.

Rescue teams from the Odeda Police Division, alongside traffic officers, swiftly responded, evacuating the victims to General Hospital, Odeda for immediate treatment. Those with critical fractures were later transferred to FMC Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for specialized care.

Appeal for Public Assistance
The police have urged witnesses or anyone with information on the whereabouts of the fleeing driver to come forward, as authorities remain committed to ensuring reckless drivers face the full weight of the law.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was handed over to his family for burial in line with Islamic rites.
