Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has advised the club’s manager, Ruben Amorim, to sign an experienced striker instead of pursuing Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel.

Tel, 19, has attracted interest from Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, and other Premier League clubs after previously rejecting a move to Tottenham Hotspur. However, Ferdinand believes United’s priority should be a proven goalscorer rather than another young talent.

“Mathys Tel is a mad talent. I’ve seen him up close in the Champions League—he has pace, ability, and finishing quality. But at Bayern Munich, he hasn’t been getting the opportunities he wants,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel.

He added that United’s current strikers, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund, are struggling for goals, while Marcus Rashford remains out of the squad.

“Man United needs experience up front. We’ve got Zirkzee and Højlund—two young strikers who need someone around them to guide them and show them how to become a top centre-forward. Another young signing might block Chido Obi Martin’s pathway into the first team.”

Ferdinand hinted that if United proceeds with signing Tel, one of the existing forwards may need to leave to avoid overcrowding the squad.

With the summer transfer window heating up, Amorim’s decision on whether to prioritize youth or experience in attack could define United’s season.
