A reckless driver, suspected to be an internet fraudster (Yahoo boy), has killed Professor Oladipupo Ademuyiwa, a distinguished Biochemistry lecturer at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), in a fatal hit-and-run accident on Sunday, February 16, 2025. The incident occurred along the Kemta-Somorin axis of Ajebo Road, Ogun State.
A senior officer of the Ogun State Police Command, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that an eyewitness described the suspect as a young man suspected to be a Yahoo boy, given his reckless driving and mannerisms before the accident.
The driver fled immediately after hitting the professor, leaving him lifeless on the road. Witnesses identified him as a young man with flashy appearances, often associated with internet fraudsters. Police have launched a manhunt, urging the public to provide any useful information.
Efforts to track the suspect have so far yielded no positive results. The police visited nearby mechanic workshops, alerting them to report any damaged vehicle matching the description provided by witnesses. However, no such vehicle has been sighted.
A major setback in the investigation occurred when officers attempted to obtain CCTV footage from a nearby building, only to be told that the surveillance cameras were non-functional at the time of the incident.
The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has expressed deep sorrow over the professor’s untimely death. In an official statement, the institution described Ademuyiwa as an outstanding academic who made significant contributions to the field of biochemistry. The entire university community is in mourning and extends heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones.
Residents of Ajebo Road Housing Estate, where the accident occurred, have blamed the Ogun State government for ignoring their calls to install speed breakers along Wole Soyinka Road. The Chairman of the Ajebo Road Housing Estate Community Development Association, Ayo Ajasa, said the community had repeatedly pleaded for speed breakers to prevent such accidents, but the government refused to act.
Within 24 hours of the professor’s death, another accident occurred on the same road, reinforcing the need for urgent intervention. The community has called on the Ogun State Government to install speed breakers, put up clear traffic signage, and enforce strict regulations to curb reckless driving.
The Ogun State government has rejected accusations of negligence, stating that it cannot be held responsible for the actions of reckless drivers. Governor Dapo Abiodun’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, said it was mischievous to blame the government for an accident caused by a reckless driver and urged the public to direct their anger towards enforcing responsible road use.
The Ogun State Police Command has vowed to apprehend the suspect, assuring the public that efforts are ongoing to track him down. Officers are monitoring hospitals, mechanics, and all possible hideouts. The police are calling on residents to provide any useful information that could lead to his arrest.
