A devastating incident unfolded today at the Government Girls Science and Technical College (GGSTC) in Potiskum, Yobe State, as a section of a classroom block collapsed, resulting in the death of one student and injuries to four others. The collapse occurred around noon, during school hours, causing panic and distress among students and staff.
The injured students were promptly transported to the Specialist Hospital Potiskum, where they are currently receiving medical attention. Dr. Bukar Aji, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, visited the hospital and confirmed that the injured students are in stable condition. He conveyed the government’s condolences to the bereaved family and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the collapse.
Established in 1979, GGSTC Potiskum is a public science and technical boarding institution dedicated to advancing girl-child education in Yobe State. This tragedy underscores the critical need for regular maintenance and safety assessments of educational infrastructure to prevent such catastrophic events.
