As Valentine’s Day approaches, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has issued a strong advisory urging Nigerians to embrace love with responsibility, stressing the importance of protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
In a press statement signed by Mrs. Toyin Aderibigbe, NACA’s Director General, Dr. Temitope Ilori, emphasized that while Valentine’s Day is a time of affection and connection, it should not come at the expense of health and safety. She cautioned against risky behaviors such as unprotected sex, multiple sexual partners, and substance abuse, which significantly increase the risk of HIV transmission.
“We want everyone to enjoy Valentine’s Day while making choices that safeguard their health. HIV is preventable, and we have the means to halt its spread. Love responsibly, get tested, and make informed decisions,” Dr. Ilori advised.
HIV Prevention: NACA’s Key Message
NACA reiterated the critical role of regular HIV testing in personal healthcare, encouraging Nigerians to know their HIV status to protect themselves and their partners. The agency assured that free HIV testing is available at all government hospitals nationwide.
Nigeria continues to battle a high HIV prevalence rate, with millions at risk due to lack of awareness, stigma, and failure to adopt preventive measures. NACA is intensifying awareness efforts, urging the public to incorporate safe practices into their relationships and to take full advantage of available free testing and counseling services.
As the world marks Valentine’s Day, the agency calls on all Nigerians to celebrate love in ways that protect their health and that of others, reinforcing the message that true love is responsible love.
