The 31-year-old Nigerian defender, who had only recently returned from a four-month layoff due to a hamstring injury, suffered another hamstring strain during West Brom’s 2-0 victory over Oxford United last weekend. Ajayi was forced off in the 41st minute, dealing a fresh blow to the Baggies’ defensive options.

West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray has expressed frustration over Semi Ajayi’s latest injury setback, describing it as a significant loss for the team.

Speaking ahead of West Brom’s crucial Championship clash against Leeds United, Mowbray admitted that the injury is not only devastating for Ajayi but also a setback for the club’s defensive structure.

“It’s disappointing and frustrating for him and for us. He’s got all the qualities to be a really talented player. His confidence in his mobility allows us to play a higher line and keep the opposition away from our goal,” Mowbray stated.

“He will be a loss—a big blow—but we wish him a speedy recovery. We have to push on with the fit players available.”

Ajayi has featured in 14 league matches for West Brom this season and was steadily regaining form before this latest injury blow. The club will now look for alternative defensive solutions as they continue their push for promotion.
