A petrol-laden tanker carrying 50,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) crashed along the Ogbomoso/Ilorin Expressway in Oyo State, escalating concerns over the rising frequency of fuel tanker accidents in the region.
Emergency responders from the Oyo State Fire Service swiftly arrived at the scene after receiving a distress call at exactly 9:20 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2025. According to the agency’s General Manager, Yemi Akinyinka, firefighters worked immediately to contain the highly flammable spill.
“On arrival, we met a Mack Trailer with registration number FGE/667H (Kano) overturned on the open road, with petrol gushing out. We instantly applied foam compound to neutralize the flammability and prevent an explosion,” Akinyinka stated.
This latest accident follows another fuel tanker crash at Olope Marun along the Ogbomoso/Oyo Road just days earlier, further raising alarms about road safety and the handling of petroleum transportation in the state.
Authorities have urged motorists and road users to exercise caution, especially around accident-prone highways, while reinforcing the need for stricter regulations on fuel transportation to prevent future disasters.
