A tragic mass shooting at an unsanctioned car show in Las Cruces, New Mexico, has left three people dead and 15 others injured, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

The late-night violence, which occurred around 10:00 PM on Friday, unfolded in a park where over 200 people had gathered for the event, featuring illegal races and trick driving.

According to Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story, the shooting stemmed from a heated altercation between two rival groups, which quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire.

“Our investigation so far indicates that there was pre-existing tension between these groups, and unfortunately, it resulted in this tragic shooting,” Story told reporters.
