Governor Siminalayi Fubara has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it an “unfortunate moment in our political history.” In a powerful statement released today, the suspended governor assured Rivers people that he remains committed to democracy, peace, and constitutional order despite the unfolding crisis.

With heavily armed military officers securing the Government House in Port Harcourt following Tinubu’s late-night broadcast, Fubara emphasized that his administration had acted in good faith to uphold stability. He highlighted his swift implementation of the Supreme Court’s judgment and the return of previously resigned commissioners as proof of his commitment to peace.

However, Fubara accused members of the Rivers State House of Assembly of deliberately frustrating his administration’s efforts to restore harmony. Despite political turbulence, he reassured citizens that governance had continued, salaries had been paid, and major projects were ongoing. “Above all, Rivers State is safe, secure, and peaceful under our watch,” he declared.

The embattled governor urged Rivers people to remain peaceful and law-abiding while vowing to engage with relevant institutions to ensure the survival of democracy in the state. “We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” he stated.

Fubara’s response is expected to intensify the political showdown in Rivers State, as the suspension of the elected governor, deputy, and state assembly members raises serious constitutional questions. With Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd) appointed as administrator, all eyes are now on the next political moves and potential legal battles ahead.
