Reports circulating on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), alleging that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, collapsed during an event in Abuja have been categorically dismissed as false. Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, labeled these claims as “fake,” emphasizing that Wike remains in good health and continues to fulfill his official duties without interruption.
This incident is not the first instance where misinformation regarding Wike’s health has surfaced. In January 2025, similar rumors suggested that the Minister was flown to London for medical attention. Olayinka promptly refuted these claims, highlighting that Wike was actively engaged in official activities in Abuja during the period in question. He pointed out the implausibility of such reports by noting Wike’s presence at various community visits in the FCT, stating, “Sebi Wike was flown to London on Thursday night for urgent medical treatment and he used Witchcraft to come back on Friday to visit Dape Community in Life Camp area, Gishiri and Pigba Sama communities in Abuja on Friday.”
The recurrence of these unfounded health-related rumors coincides with heightened political tensions in Rivers State, involving a face-off between the suspended Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his estranged political godfather, Nyesom Wike. Observers suggest that such misinformation campaigns may be strategically aimed at undermining Wike’s political influence amid ongoing disputes.
Olayinka has consistently urged the public and media outlets to exercise discernment and verify information before dissemination, emphasizing the detrimental impact of spreading unverified news on public perception and the political climate. He reiterated that Wike remains committed to his responsibilities as the FCT Minister and continues to serve with unwavering dedication.
