The Imo State Police Command has dismissed allegations of torture and extortion leveled against its Anti-Kidnapping Unit, describing the claims as false and misleading.

Police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, issued a statement on Friday, March 21, refuting a media report that accused officers at the Tiger Base facility of systematic abuse of detainees. He criticized the report, titled “Investigation Exposes Alarming Abuse of Detainees at Police’s Tiger Base”, for lacking factual accuracy and failing to represent the true operations of the command.

Okoye argued that the media platform behind the allegations did not verify the claims before publication. “The allegations, attributed to complainants using pseudo names, have been investigated and found to be misleading and unfounded,” he stated.

He further assured that the Imo State Police Command adheres to legal protocols in handling suspects and remains committed to respecting human rights. Citizens with complaints against any tactical unit are encouraged to report through the Complaint Response Unit for proper investigation.

Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has reaffirmed that any officer found guilty of misconduct will face disciplinary action. He also urged media professionals to uphold journalistic integrity by verifying reports before publication.

“The spread of unverified and misleading information against the Command erodes public trust and undermines the integrity of the Force,” Okoye concluded.
