The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced the recall process for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District. This development follows the submission of a petition by constituents alleging loss of confidence in her representation.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, confirmed that the commission received the necessary contact details from the petitioners, which were initially missing. He stated, “The contact address of representatives of the petitioners, their telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses have now been provided.”

In response, INEC has notified Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and the Senate leadership about the petition. The commission is set to scrutinize the list of signatories to verify that the petition is endorsed by more than half of the registered voters in the constituency, as mandated by the Nigerian Constitution.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, currently serving a six-month suspension from the Senate for alleged misconduct, has denied receiving any official notification from INEC regarding the recall petition. She remarked, “I haven’t been served. I will ask my lawyers.”

The recall initiative has sparked debates, with some constituents expressing dissatisfaction over the senator’s recent actions, while others view the move as politically motivated. As INEC proceeds with the verification process, the political landscape in Kogi Central remains tense, awaiting the commission’s findings and subsequent actions.
