A devastating explosion engulfed a passenger bus on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway near Buhari Estate on March 4, 2025, resulting in the tragic death of 16 individuals, with three others sustaining severe injuries.
The incident occurred around 1:00 PM when a white Mazda bus, bearing the registration number KJA 949 YJ, erupted in flames. The vehicle was transporting 21 passengers and was also carrying a filled gas cylinder, which is believed to have led to the explosion.
Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, confirmed that the victims were burned beyond recognition, making immediate identification challenging. The injured were promptly evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi Aba, Abeokuta, while efforts to remove the deceased from the scene were underway.
FRSC Sector Commander Akinwumi Fasakin expressed deep concern over the driver’s decision to transport a gas-filled cylinder alongside passengers. He emphasized that such highly flammable materials should only be carried in designated vehicles operated by trained professionals. Fasakin urged both drivers and passengers to prioritize safety to prevent future tragedies.
