Popular comedian and activist Mr Macaroni has slammed the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Agbor, for issuing a disciplinary query to a student who posted a video of the now-viral welcome song for First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on TikTok.
The controversy erupted after a group of nursing students in Delta openly refused to sing a song that described Remi Tinubu as their “mother” during her March 25, 2025 visit for the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme at the Dome Event Center, Asaba. Their reaction, captured on video, quickly went viral, sparking widespread debate.
In response, the college authorities issued a query letter dated March 27, 2025, accusing a student, Nurse Osato Edobe, of a “malicious act” for recording and posting an unofficial response to the song. The letter, signed by Provost Evbodagbe Rita Ogonne, has drawn severe backlash from Nigerians, who see it as an attempt to suppress student voices.
Joining the outrage, Mr Macaroni, known for his vocal stance on social justice, questioned why the institution was punishing students for refusing to sing. Sharing the query letter on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
“Delta State College of Nursing Sciences is threatening a student with disciplinary action because of a song??? The students say dem sabi their mama!! Students wey their mama dey work hard to give them better life… una wan come expel them because dem refuse to deny their mama? Na by force?”
The incident has reignited discussions on free speech, forced loyalty, and political influence in educational institutions, with many calling on the school to withdraw the sanction.
