A sweeping security operation has led to the rearrest of three out of 12 inmates who escaped during Sunday’s jailbreak at Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State. The attack, which has raised concerns over prison security nationwide, also resulted in the brutal killing of a correctional officer by the fleeing convicts.
Addressing journalists on Monday, Acting Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Sly Nwakuche, confirmed the developments and vowed that the remaining escapees would be hunted down. He urged citizens to assist security agencies with information that could lead to their capture, warning that sheltering fugitives is a criminal offense.
The Kogi jailbreak adds to Nigeria’s growing list of security challenges, with recent prison breaks fueling fears of rising violent crime. Authorities have yet to disclose the identities of the recaptured inmates or details of how they were tracked down. Meanwhile, intelligence agencies are investigating potential inside collusion and security lapses that may have facilitated the escape.
