A raging inferno has gutted a two-storey building on Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, Onitsha, Anambra State, sending residents into panic as firefighters battle to contain the spread.
The fire, which broke out around 6:20 AM on Friday, rapidly spread to a neighboring building, escalating fears of further destruction. Residents and business owners frantically tried to salvage their belongings as thick black smoke filled the sky.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but eyewitnesses reported seeing flames suddenly erupt before engulfing the structure. Men of the Anambra State Fire Service arrived swiftly at the scene, working tirelessly to bring the situation under control.
Confirming the incident, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Anambra State Fire Service, Chukwudi Chiketa, assured the public that efforts were in place to prevent further damage.
“The distress call came in at exactly 6:20 AM today, and our firefighters responded immediately. We urge residents to remain calm as our team is actively managing the situation,” Chiketa stated.
Onitsha, known for its dense population and thriving commercial activities, has experienced multiple fire outbreaks in recent months, sparking concerns about inadequate fire safety measures in the city.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and report fire hazards promptly to prevent further tragedies.
