Most Rev. Dr. David O. C. Onuoha, President of the Christian Council of Nigeria, has issued a grave warning about the nation’s future, urging leaders and citizens to take immediate action to prevent Nigeria from spiraling into deeper turmoil. Amid escalating insecurity, economic hardship, and widespread distrust in government institutions, he insists that only justice, unity, and accountability can save the country from impending disaster.
“The rising insecurity, economic struggles, and political recklessness are pushing Nigeria to the brink. Leaders must act responsibly to secure the nation’s future rather than fuel the chaos that threatens its stability,” Onuoha cautioned in a strongly worded statement.
His message comes at a time when Nigerians are grappling with unprecedented hardship. Inflation has skyrocketed, unemployment continues to rise, and citizens are losing faith in the government’s ability to protect lives and property. Onuoha emphasized that political decisions driven by selfish interests or ethnic and religious bias only deepen the country’s divide, warning that impunity breeds anarchy.
The judiciary, often regarded as the last hope of the common man, must also rise to the occasion, he asserted. With recent court rulings stirring controversy, he called on judges to uphold true justice, ensuring their decisions inspire confidence rather than inflame tensions. “A judiciary that fails to uphold fairness creates disorder. Nigerians look to the courts for justice, not confusion,” he stressed.
Onuoha also directed his appeal to legislators, reminding them that they are accountable to the people who elected them. He criticized any move that prioritizes personal gain over the well-being of constituents, labeling such actions a betrayal of trust.
Beyond political and legal institutions, he drew attention to the worsening security crisis, calling for urgent measures to dismantle criminal networks terrorizing communities. From insurgents in the Northeast to bandits in the Northwest and kidnappers across the nation, he warned that failure to act decisively could lead to total destabilization. “These agents of destruction must be stopped before they stop Nigeria,” he declared.
As Christians observe Lent and Muslims mark Ramadan, Onuoha called for deep reflection and a renewed commitment to national unity. He urged all Nigerians to reject hatred, embrace fairness, and work together to build a society where no one is oppressed. Quoting Amos 5:24, he emphasized, “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”
His urgent plea resonates with millions of Nigerians who long for a peaceful and prosperous nation. As the country stands at a critical crossroads, his call for accountability, justice, and unity serves as a wake-up call for leaders and citizens alike.
