Ohanaeze Ndigbo has accused the Nigerian Senate of sustaining the historical marginalization of the Igbo people following its rejection of a proposal to immortalize Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the man behind Nigeria’s most credible election on June 12, 1993.

The apex Igbo socio-cultural body, in a statement issued on Friday, March 29, 2025, by its Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, described the 10th Senate’s decision as a clear indication that the civil war against the Igbo has never truly ended but continues within the corridors of power.

Senators from the Southeast staged a walkout on March 27, 2025, after a bill seeking to rename the INEC headquarters after Nwosu was shot down. Ohanaeze condemned the action, stating that honoring Moshood Abiola as the winner of the June 12, 1993 election while ignoring Nwosu, who conducted the process, is a hypocritical display of selective recognition.

The group further called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Southeast governors to take decisive action in honoring Nwosu, arguing that his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy deserve national recognition.
