Former Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka has delivered a scathing criticism of the National Assembly, accusing it of failing to uphold the dignity and integrity of its own institution.
Chidoka lamented that lawmakers, instead of strengthening legislative authority and accountability, have allowed the erosion of democratic principles, making the institution appear weak and compromised.
“The National Assembly is the bedrock of democracy, yet it continues to diminish its own relevance by failing to assert itself. When an institution does not respect itself, how can it command the respect of the people?” Chidoka questioned.
His remarks have ignited debates on the declining influence of the legislature, with critics pointing to the frequent executive interference, lack of oversight on government spending, and the passage of controversial bills without thorough scrutiny.
Chidoka urged Nigerians to demand more from their representatives, warning that a compromised legislature undermines democracy.
