The Niger State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a yet-to-be-identified police officer who allegedly went on a drunken shooting spree, killing a resident in Chanchaga Local Government Area.

The tragic incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 10, 2025, in the Angwan-Kaje area of Maitumbi, has sparked outrage, with residents calling for justice.

According to eyewitness accounts, the officer, attached to the Maitumbi Police Station, reportedly consumed excessive alcohol before picking up his rifle and firing shots indiscriminately. In the process, he fatally shot a resident identified as Sani, who was asleep at the time of the attack.

Another victim, a tea vendor known as Mai Shayi, narrowly escaped after the officer allegedly attempted to shoot him as well. Bullet shells were later recovered from the scene.

Confirming the incident, Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, stated that Commissioner of Police, Shuwala Danmamman, has ordered an immediate investigation to identify and apprehend the officer responsible.

“The police command received the complaint of the alleged shooting this morning, which was reported to have occurred at about 3 AM on Monday. The Commissioner of Police has directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Maitumbi to investigate and identify the officer responsible for this heinous act,” Abiodun stated.

The incident has raised concerns over police conduct and misuse of firearms, with many demanding swift justice. The police have assured the public that further updates on the investigation will be communicated.
