Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has openly criticized the club’s choice to sell midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli last summer, a move he believes has significantly impacted the team’s performance this season.
McTominay, a product of United’s youth academy, transferred to Napoli in August 2024 for £25 million. Since his arrival, the 28-year-old Scottish international has flourished under manager Antonio Conte, scoring seven goals and providing four assists in 27 appearances, propelling Napoli to second place in Serie A.
In contrast, Manchester United has endured a turbulent 2024-2025 season. The team currently languishes in 14th place in the Premier League, having amassed only 33 points from 27 matches. Their recent elimination from the FA Cup, following a penalty shootout defeat to Fulham, has further compounded their woes.
Solskjaer, who managed United from December 2018 to November 2021 and now leads Turkish side Besiktas, expressed his dismay over McTominay’s departure. He emphasized the midfielder’s knack for crucial goals and his deep understanding of the club’s ethos. “I’m upset that we let him go because he was important last season when he kept popping up with goals. His heart and his knowledge of the culture were important,” Solskjaer remarked.
During Solskjaer’s tenure, McTominay made 115 appearances for Manchester United, contributing 14 goals and three assists. His departure has left a void in United’s midfield, a gap that the club has struggled to fill this season.
The decision to sell McTominay has been met with widespread criticism, especially given United’s current predicament. The club’s lackluster performances have raised questions about their transfer strategies and overall direction. As McTominay continues to shine in Italy, Manchester United faces mounting pressure to reassess their decisions and address the challenges hindering their success.
