Veteran journalist and former presidential adviser Reuben Abati has delivered a scathing critique of the Super Eagles’ performance in their 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
Abati, speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, March 27, 2025, accused the Nigerian team of going complacent after Victor Osimhen put them ahead in the 74th minute, allowing Zimbabwe to snatch a dramatic equalizer in stoppage time through Tawanda Chirewa.
“The Super Eagles developed elephantiasis after Osimhen’s goal,” Abati remarked, expressing frustration at how the team failed to protect their lead for just 16 minutes.
The disappointing result leaves Nigeria in fourth place in Group C, trailing behind South Africa, further complicating their qualification hopes for the 2026 World Cup.
Abati referenced former Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, who attributed Nigeria’s football struggles to poor administration and the controversial decision to abolish the Ministry of Sports in favor of the National Sports Commission.
“Since I left office as Minister of Sports, Nigeria has not qualified for the World Cup. Poor leadership and bad decisions are killing Nigerian football,” Dalung reportedly said.
With upcoming crucial qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa in September, Abati warned that Nigeria’s chances remain uncertain, while other teams in the group have proven they are not to be underestimated.
“Zimbabwe told us they were not in Uyo for holidays, and in the 90th minute, they proved it,” he added.
The Super Eagles now face an uphill battle to secure a World Cup ticket, with Nigerian fans left relying on mathematical permutations rather than decisive victories.
