Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has fired back at critics who labeled his character in Omoni Oboli’s latest movie, Love In Every Word, as a “simp.”

Arukwe, who played Odogwu Obiora, a wealthy Igbo businessman who showers his partner Chioma (played by Bambam) with luxury and affection, has faced criticism from some male viewers who argue that his role misrepresents Igbo men.

While the film has been widely praised by female audiences as an ideal portrayal of romantic commitment, some male critics claim it pushes an unrealistic expectation of men’s financial responsibilities in relationships.

An X user, Himp2million, criticized the movie, writing: “Anambra men are not simps. Your movie is liked only by ladies who have always had the illusion of an Odogwu that’ll spend his last dime on them.”

Responding to the backlash, Arukwe defended his role, insisting that providing for a partner is not a sign of weakness but responsibility.

“Taking care of your woman and spending money on her doesn’t make you a simp. It only makes you a responsible man. How else do you show love to your partner if you can’t take care of their needs from the abundance of your wealth?” he wrote.

This isn’t the first time Arukwe has faced criticism for his on-screen portrayals. In 2023, he was called out for allegedly exaggerating his Igbo accent in Funke Akindele’s blockbuster A Tribe Called Judah.
