Frank Lampard has broken his silence on his turbulent second stint at Chelsea, admitting that the situation behind the scenes was far from right during his return as caretaker manager in April 2023.
Brought back as a temporary solution following the sackings of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, Lampard was tasked with steadying a sinking ship. However, his brief tenure ended in disaster, with just one win in 11 games as Chelsea slumped to a dismal 12th-place finish—their worst Premier League campaign in decades.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Lampard shed light on the chaos he encountered at Stamford Bridge, hinting at poor motivation, lack of direction, and internal struggles that plagued the dressing room.
“I saw things that I know cannot be right at elite football, and that’s the truth,” Lampard revealed. “Many players were in transition, some were leaving, and motivation was a problem. In an interim role, you can’t really fix that.”
Despite his legendary status at Chelsea, the former Blues midfielder admitted that he “did not love” his time back at the club, reinforcing his belief that a unified, committed squad is essential for success.
With Mauricio Pochettino now at the helm, Chelsea continue their rebuilding process, but Lampard’s revelations raise questions about the club’s culture and leadership under Todd Boehly’s ownership.
