A police patrol van belonging to Abia State’s joint security task force, Operation Crush, veered off the Umuahia-Bende Road and plunged into a ditch on Sunday, March 30, 2025, resulting in the death of one officer and leaving nine others severely injured.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described the horrifying moment when the vehicle lost control on the badly maintained stretch of road near Isieke. Residents and sympathizers immediately mobilized to rescue the injured personnel, who were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, where doctors are battling to save their lives.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of the accident, but some bystanders believe the van suffered a mechanical fault or hit an unexpected road hazard before careening off the road. The identity of the deceased officer has not been officially disclosed.
A shocking twist emerged when one officer, initially declared missing after being thrown from the vehicle, was later found alive in the nearby bush, further intensifying the emotional toll of the incident.
The Abia State government has dispatched a senior official to visit the injured officers at FMC Umuahia, with assurances that the government will provide necessary support to the affected families and personnel.
