A young couple, identified as Peace and her male partner, were found lifeless in their apartment in Port Harcourt Township, Rivers State, after inhaling toxic generator fumes overnight.
Neighbors grew suspicious on Saturday morning when the lovers failed to emerge from their room. Upon forcing the door open, they discovered their lifeless bodies. The couple had reportedly placed their generator in the passage outside their room, running it through the night for uninterrupted power supply.
Local resident Chima, who spoke to journalists, said concerned neighbors alerted the police at the Central Police Station. The Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary investigations point to carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause of death.
This tragedy underscores the dangers of improper generator use, a recurring issue in Nigeria due to unreliable electricity supply. Experts warn that exposure to carbon monoxide from generators in enclosed spaces can be fatal within minutes.
