A devastating fire has razed a residential building in Oyo town, leaving millions of naira in damages. The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning at Elere House, located in the Gold and Rock area of Oyo.
The Oyo State Fire Service responded promptly after receiving a distress call at precisely 12:24 AM. Led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Oyedeji, fire personnel arrived at the scene to find a private residential building consisting of six rooms engulfed in flames.
The blaze is believed to have been triggered by an electricity surge when power was restored by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). The surge ignited the fire, which spread rapidly through the building, causing significant damage to the property.
Despite the severity of the blaze, no casualties were reported. Firefighters worked tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding buildings, saving properties worth billions of naira.
General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the cause of the fire and praised the swift actions of his team in limiting the extent of the damage. “Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed by the fire,” Akinyinka stated. “However, we were able to prevent further loss by saving neighboring structures.”
While the incident has left the residents devastated, the quick response from the fire service helped avert a more catastrophic outcome. Local authorities are urging citizens to take precautions against electrical surges and to ensure that their homes are equipped with fire safety measures.
The aftermath of the incident highlights the ongoing challenges posed by electrical infrastructure in the region, as residents continue to deal with the unpredictable impact of power surges on their homes and businesses.
