The Osun State Commissioner for Education, Folorunso Oladoyin, has said the ministry has strengthened its Inspectorate Department to continue thorough supervision of schools across the state.

Oladoyin, while addressing a press conference to acquaint parents and guardians with salient issues in the education sector as the 2022/2023 academic session commenced yesterday, said through the supervision of schools, the ministry had made some rather odd discoveries.

According to him, during visits to schools, the ministry discovered that about 47 teachers were having mental health challenges, adding that instead of sacking them, the government sent them to rehabilitation homes.

Oladoyin said the visit also uncovered a teacher that has relocated to the United States of America but was still drawing salaries.

He said, “During visits to schools, we discovered that some teachers were no longer working in the state but were still earning salaries. A teacher relocated to the United States of America over two years ago, yet she was drawing a salary on a monthly basis.

We also discovered that 47 active teachers in schools were suffering from different mental health challenges. Rather than disengage them, we placed them on rehabilitation programmes.”

On the new measures introduced to improve the standard of education in the state, Oladoyin said the ministry had commenced a centralised admission system involving the re-introduction of placement examinations (Common Entrance Exams) for candidates intending to gain admission into JSS 1 and SSS 1 in public secondary schools.

The commissioner added that the new admission process was introduced with a view to standardising and sanitising the process of admitting teachable students into the state secondary schools.

Oladoyin added that promotion from SSS 2 to SSS 3 in public secondary schools was based on the 40 per cent pass mark in five subjects including Mathematics and English Language.
