There was panic at Nworieubi on the Owerri / Orlu expressway on Wednesday after a tanker carrying premium motor spirit (petrol ) was gutted by fire .
Southern City News gathered that the tanker was about dispensing fuel at Ukwo petroleum station when it caught fire .
The inferno, Southern City News learnt that the incident caused pandemonium in the area, as people , including motorists and traders abandoned their vehicles , shops and scampered for safety .
According to an eyewitness , Ugonna Orji, “ The tanker, which came from the Orlu axis of the expressway , was about offloading the fuel before it was gutted by fire .
“Nobody knew the cause of the fire outbreak . It was swift and the inferno was terrible . It destroyed valuables worth millions of naira, but we are happy that fire fighters intervened quickly. ”
The State Police Public Relations Officer , Andrew Enwerem , who confirmed the fire outbreak, said that no life was lost in the process .
“It was a case of a tanker , which was about dispensing fuel and it was engulfed in fire . The driver quickly drove it out of the facility,” he added.
According to him , the command quickly contacted the state fire service that came and put out the inferno.
