Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, has picked Lisandro Martinez as the best Premier League defender based on current form.

Martinez has been crucial to United’s resurgence under Erik ten Hag this season.

However, the World Cup winner had arrived under a cloud of doubt from Ajax last summer.

But he is now effectively first choice alongside Raphael Varane, ahead of captain Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

Ferdinand has told his FIVE podcast that there was no “argument” that Martinez is currently best in class at the heart of defence.

“On form right now, I don’t think there’s really much argument coming from anywhere else.

“I think he’s dominant, he’s aggressive, he’s a leader, he communicates well, he shows character, he’s there in big moments,” Ferdinand said.
