Tragedy struck along the Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road as 16 passengers lost their lives in a commercial bus accident on Tuesday evening. The bus, carrying 18 passengers, crashed into the fence of Maduka University, Ekwegbe, and burst into flames, leaving 16 occupants beyond recognition.

Only two passengers survived the crash and are currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.

According to Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, the accident involved a white Toyota Hummer bus with Bauchi State commercial registration number DAS 215 XA, bearing the inscription “Masha Allah.” The bus was reportedly speeding when it lost control and crashed into the university fence.

The bus, loaded with edible vegetables, other food items, and passengers’ luggage, was heading towards Nsukka from the Enugu axis of the road. However, the exact departure point and final destination of the vehicle have not been determined.

Police officers, soldiers, and members of the public responded promptly to the incident, rescuing two survivors and taking them to the hospital.

The Igbo-Etiti Police Division has recovered the passengers’ belongings, but further investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
