Pelumi Olajengbesi, the legal counsel for Dorcas Adeyinka, a Lagos socialite based in the United Kingdom, has denounced the Nigeria Police Force’s decision to declare his client wanted on what he termed “baseless allegations.”

In a statement released on Monday, Olajengbesi argued that since the matter regarding the allegations is already before the court, it is improper for the police to declare someone wanted, especially when there’s no risk of flight.

He asserted that Adeyinka is a law-abiding citizen, recently honored with a chieftaincy title, and condemned what he described as a needless media trial orchestrated by the police, which he claimed has become a recurring trend among security agencies in Nigeria.

Olajengbesi clarified that his client had cooperated with the police in previous instances related to the allegations, including a social media dispute involving the circulation of private images. Despite facing harassment and attempts to silence her, Adeyinka sought police assistance but was met with further unwarranted attention.

The lawyer highlighted previous instances where his client was unfairly targeted and subsequently cleared of unfounded charges, emphasizing her compliance with legal procedures.

Regarding the recent police declaration, Olajengbesi questioned its validity, citing Adeyinka’s public presence at an event on May 11, 2024, which contradicts the assertion that she is evading authorities.

He expressed confidence in the judicial system to uphold justice and fairness for all parties involved, emphasizing the need for adherence to legal processes.

The statement also referenced a recent development where two social media users were summoned by the Chief Magistrate Court, Wuse Zone 6, for criminal defamation against Adeyinka. The complainant accused the defendants of sharing her nude photos online and making baseless allegations, leading to contempt and ridicule.

The matter is adjourned to June 4, 2024, with the court ordering the defendants’ presence for further proceedings.
