The Abia State Government has announced its intention to collaborate with Israel to enhance its economic and technological capabilities, particularly in human capital development, agriculture, the digital economy, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Governor Alex Otti revealed this initiative during a visit from the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, at the Government House in Umuahia.
Ambassador Freeman praised Governor Otti’s leadership and the improved security in Abia, noting that his visit was a testament to the governor’s positive impact. “As Israelis, we are known for our stringent security measures. When I was invited to Abia State, my security team approved the visit without hesitation, which is a tribute to the work being done here,” Freeman said.
Highlighting the similarities between Israel and Nigeria, particularly their entrepreneurial spirit and young, innovative populations, Freeman expressed optimism about potential collaborations. “Both nations share a determination to overcome obstacles. In Israel, if a door is closed, we find another way in, a trait we see in Nigerians as well,” he added.
Freeman emphasized Israel’s expertise in agriculture, particularly in cassava, rice, and cocoa production. He noted that Israel’s advanced technology allows rice to be grown with significantly less water—1,500 liters compared to the usual 5,000 liters per kilogram. This innovation, he said, could be transformative for Abia’s agricultural sector.
The ambassador also highlighted Israel’s commitment to education and technology, pointing out the Innov8 program, which mentors young Nigerian entrepreneurs and innovators for six to nine months and helps them secure funding.
Governor Otti expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, acknowledging the ambassador’s understanding of Abia’s needs and the potential for collaboration. He praised the resilience and creativity of Abia’s citizens, which he sees as the state’s greatest asset. “Our people have a ‘can do’ spirit and continue to thrive despite past challenges,” Otti said.
Plans are underway to establish an Abia Innovation Center to foster innovation and digitalization. Governor Otti assured that this is just the beginning of transformative changes in the state. “In less than a year, you will see significant advancements in innovation, digital technology, and MSMEs,” he promised.
The meeting was attended by several members of the State Executive Council and senior aides, including the Chief of Staff, Dr. Caleb Ajagba, and the Principal Secretary and Chief Strategy Officer, Mr. Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu, who joined the governor in welcoming the Israeli delegation.
