Arsenal legend Ian Wright has claimed that Son Heung-Min’s late miss during Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City played a crucial role in the Premier League title race.
Son had a clear opportunity to equalize at 1-1 following a defensive mix-up but shot straight at City’s goalkeeper, Stefan Ortega. Shortly after, Erling Haaland secured the win for City with a penalty.
Wright explained that if Tottenham had managed to take points off City, Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Everton on Sunday would have clinched the title for the Gunners, their first in 20 years.
Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Wright said: “Honestly, you couldn’t have asked for a better person. When he’s going through I’m thinking, ‘Oh my god, this is it’. And then the more you watch it, you can see how far his standing foot was from the ball. He kind of rushed the finish and didn’t get a good connection. How Pep [Guardiola] was is how I was in my front room! I was thinking, ‘That was it right there, that was the title right there’.”
