The Enugu State Police Command has announced the arrest and arraignment of a masquerader accused of assaulting a woman in the Nsukka area of the state.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the masquerader, known as Oriokpa, was intercepted and arrested on May 12, 2024, around 3:45 p.m. by operatives from the Nsukka Sector of the Command’s Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad. The incident occurred at Ugwuoye Junction, Nsukka, where Oriokpa was seen physically assaulting a female victim.

The masquerader was later identified as Ugwuoke Ebube, aged 22. He was arraigned in court on Wednesday in Nsukka, where he was subsequently granted bail.

Ndukwe explained that the investigation revealed that Ebube was part of a group of masqueraders who had similarly assaulted a female nurse riding a motorcycle, an incident that was captured in a viral video in April 2024.

The state Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, condemned the assault, warning that individuals who use cultural celebrations as a pretext to commit crimes would be held accountable. He emphasized that the command would not hesitate to bring perpetrators to justice.

Ndukwe reiterated that the police are committed to ensuring such criminal acts are addressed promptly, as demonstrated by this recent arrest and arraignment.
