The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially joined the nationwide strike led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). This move follows the Federal Government’s failure to meet the unions’ demand for a new minimum wage.

ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, issued a directive on Monday urging all university lecturers to participate in the strike, citing the government’s inability to finalize minimum wage negotiations and reverse the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

In a statement, Osodeke emphasized, “Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress. Branch chairpersons are to mobilize all members to participate in the strike action.”

ASUU’s decision comes amid ongoing dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s handling of academic issues, including the failure to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities and inadequate salary increments for university staff.

The NLC declared the indefinite strike action starting June 3, 2024, leading to widespread disruption across various sectors, including education. The union’s solidarity with the NLC and TUC signals a unified front in the struggle for better wages and working conditions.
