A High Court in Birnin Kebbi has sentenced Farida Abubakar to death by hanging for the brutal murder of her former husband, Chief Magistrate Attahiru Muhammad-Ibrahim. The case, which has captivated public attention, reached its climax on Monday when Justice Umar Abubakar delivered the final verdict.

Farida Abubakar was arraigned on August 25, 2022, with the main charge filed on July 26, 2023. The prosecution presented compelling evidence that Abubakar stabbed her ex-husband multiple times in the abdomen, neck, and left arm, leading to his untimely death. Justice Abubakar stated that the court was convinced beyond doubt of her guilt.

In an emotional plea for leniency, defense counsel Mudashiru Sani, representing Abdulnasir Sallau, described Farida as a first-time offender with aged parents and a young daughter who relies on her care. He implored the court to consider a lighter sentence, emphasizing her role as a caregiver and the potential for her reformation.

However, Prosecuting Counsel Lawal Hudu-Garba, the Director of Public Prosecution for the state, urged the court to uphold the death sentence as a deterrent to others. He stressed the importance of following the law to maintain justice and prevent similar crimes.

Following the judgment, Sani announced plans to appeal the verdict, signaling that the legal battle may continue. The case remains a stark reminder of the severe consequences of violent crime and the complexities of justice.
