As Nigerians celebrated Democracy Day on June 12, the Imo State Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Ambassador Eluwa Ifeanyi Henry, emphasized the significance of the day in honoring MKO Abiola. Abiola, who won the 1993 presidential election under the SDP, is remembered for his role in Nigeria’s democratic history.

Reflecting on the events, Eluwa noted that Abiola’s victory in what is widely considered Nigeria’s fairest election was nullified, leading to his imprisonment and eventual death in detention, following the assassination of his wife, Kudirat Abiola.

In an interview from his office in Owerri, Eluwa argued that Nigeria has struggled with true democracy and good leadership since Abiola was denied his mandate. He asserted that for genuine democratic balance to be achieved, the SDP should be given the chance to produce Nigeria’s president in 2027.

“To honor MKO’s legacy, the SDP should be allowed to lead Nigeria in 2027,” Eluwa stated. “Abiola’s dream of true democracy remains alive through the SDP, which continues to strive for social justice and good governance.”

Eluwa called for adherence to SDP’s ideologies, which he believes can lead to peaceful and credible elections, free from fraud and violence. He lamented the persistent issues of electoral malpractice in Nigeria and urged for a shift towards integrity in the political process.

“I, along with our state leader Obinna Bright Ekwebelem and the entire Imo SDP executive, celebrate our National Chairman Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, and honor those who died pursuing good governance,” Eluwa said. He also praised President Bola Tinubu for recognizing June 12 as Democracy Day, calling on citizens to embrace SDP for positive political change.

Eluwa urged the federal government to reintroduce history studies in schools to ensure that future generations understand the significance of June 12. He expressed optimism about Nigerians coming together under the SDP banner, citing historical victories of the party in various regions as evidence of its broad acceptance.

“The SDP produced Nigeria’s first democratically elected president and has a strong legacy in Anambra and beyond,” he concluded.
