Lagos Bus Services Ltd. (LBSL) has launched a new policy aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its mass transit operations, promoting a greener and more sustainable future. This announcement was made by Mr. Idowu Oguntona, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LBSL, during the company’s fifth-anniversary celebration in Lagos.
Mr. Oguntona explained that the LBSL Sustainability Policy aligns with both the Lagos State Climate Action Plan and the Lagos State Transport Policy. He noted that the policy represents a significant milestone in LBSL’s sustainability efforts.
“By incorporating environmental, social, and governance principles into every aspect of our operations, we are not only improving the quality of our services but also enhancing the overall well-being of Lagos State and Nigeria,” Oguntona stated.
He highlighted that the transport sector contributes about 20% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions. LBSL aims to set an example by reducing the carbon footprint of its bus mass transit system.
The policy underscores LBSL’s mission to provide intelligent and sustainable bus transportation solutions for a modern city. Additionally, the organization has introduced a state-of-the-art sick bay to prioritize the health and well-being of its employees.
Since its establishment, LBSL has made significant strides, transporting over 52 million passengers and covering more than 27 million kilometers across over 30 routes. The LBSL driver training academy has graduated over 1,862 drivers. The company employs 850 staff, with 216 of them having been with LBSL for over five years.
Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director and CEO of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), which regulates LBSL, praised the organization for its sustainability policy and accomplishments over the past five years, demonstrating staff commitment.
“As your regulator, we see what you do and can confirm that LBSL transports the largest number of passengers daily in Lagos. You are doing an excellent job that we are proud of. Lagos residents appreciate your efforts. Please continue,” Akinajo said.
Mr. Olawale Musa, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos Ministry of Transportation, acknowledged the challenges faced by LBSL and assured that their concerns are being addressed.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, commended LBSL’s achievements over the past five years as evidence of consistent and effective leadership. He stressed the importance of maintaining high service levels and noted that high-capacity buses help reduce the number of cars on the road, thereby lowering carbon emissions.
During the anniversary event, awards were presented to 216 pioneer staff members in recognition of their contributions to the organization.
