The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down a bakery in Sokoto State for allegedly using unfortified sugar and banned bromate. NAFDAC’s State Coordinator, Garba Adamu, announced the closure on Friday, following a special raid conducted by agency officials.

Adamu emphasized that, per federal regulations enforced by NAFDAC, only fortified and registered sugar containing vitamin A and other essential nutrients is permitted for sale and consumption in Nigeria. “This policy ensures that consumers receive the maximum nutritional and health benefits from food products,” he stated.

In addition to sealing the bakery, six other bakeries were sanctioned for poor hygiene standards. The enforcement team, led by Buhari Manzo, has intensified routine inspections across the state to ensure compliance with safety and hygiene regulations. “Bakeries are closely monitored to prevent the use of saccharine or other banned substances as substitutes for regulated ingredients,” Adamu explained.

Adamu issued a stern warning to producers against the use of adulterated, counterfeit, unregistered, or expired ingredients. He stressed that NAFDAC would maintain strict enforcement measures to protect public health. The agency plans to extend its operations to local government areas to ensure that all food products in circulation meet hygienic and safety standards.

He also urged the public to avoid unregistered products and to report any suspicious practices or contamination to NAFDAC, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to safeguarding the health of the nation.
