A Benin couple has been sentenced to five years in prison for their roles in trafficking a woman to Dubai for prostitution, marking a significant victory in the fight against human trafficking. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) secured the conviction, underscoring its commitment to tackling such heinous crimes.
The High Court, Criminal Division 2, in Benin City found Adesuwa Otabor and Otabor Idahosa guilty of conspiring to traffic the victim, an offense that breaches Section 27 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015. The couple’s conviction is a testament to the judicial system’s dedication to addressing human trafficking.
Mr. Ganiu Aganran, Coordinator of NAPTIP’s Benin Zonal Command, highlighted the case as a crucial part of the agency’s broader strategy to dismantle trafficking networks and secure justice for victims. “This conviction is a clear message that trafficking will not be tolerated,” Aganran stated.
